Senator Mike Morrell Chosen as CAL MOAA 2016 Legislator of the year

California State Senator Mike Morrell (R-Rancho Cucamonga) has been named as the 2016 Legislator of the Year by the Military Officers Association of America’s California Council of Chapters (Cal-MOAA).

The Cal-MOAA Legislator of the Year Award is given to a California Senator or Assemblymember who has, in the previous year, worked to improve the lives of California’s 1.8 million military retirees and veterans, as well as their dependents.

Senator Morrell, during his time in both the Assembly and the Senate, has energetically supported veterans, the military, and their dependents living in his district.

In 2016, he authored the Welcome Home Act. The bill would eliminate, for honorably discharged veterans, the initial fees required to obtain an occupational license in California.

He has also sponsored three annual Patriots of the Past, Present and Future Recognition Ceremonies in his district. He and the community honor local veterans, service members, and young leaders from around the region. Senator Morrell was a staunch supporter Senate Bill 2, which would reduce the property tax burdens regarding Veterans Halls.

Senator Morrell has authored legislation to direct the State Fire Marshal to accept certification of military firefighter training for a civilian job, offer resident classification for veterans attending the state’s colleges, stiffen penalties for the vandalism of Veterans Memorials, provide free and reduced cost hunting and sport fishing licenses for veterans, and a resolution on Purple Heart Day.

According to Colonel Lorna Griess, USA-Retired, Cal-MOAA Legislative Chair, “Senator Morrell has great respect for veterans and he is involved in the veterans events and activities in his home district. He brings a thoughtful and solid approach on how to help today’s veterans to the Legislature.”

The mission of CAL-MOAA is to support directly and through its affiliated chapters, the military community. This includes active, retired, former commissioned and warrant officers of all seven Uniformed Services including the National Guard and Reserve components and their surviving spouses. Cal-MOAA advocates preserving and enhancing the rights, benefits and entitlements, and quality of life of the military community.
